12 Best Cafes in George Town, Penang
George Town's Cafe Spectrum
George Town has two parallel cafe cultures: the traditional kopitiam (Chinese coffee shop), where Hainanese-style kopi has been served since the 1940s, and the newer wave of specialty coffee shops in renovated shophouses.
Old-School Kopitiams
1. Toh Soon Cafe (Lebuh Campbell) — The original Penang kopitiam. Charcoal-toasted bread, soft-boiled eggs with soy and white pepper, and kopi roasted with butter. Cash only, marble tabletops, ceiling fans. Open 7am–11am.
2. Sin Kheng Aun Coffee Shop (Chulia Street) — A working-class coffee shop that's survived gentrification. Kaya toast, half-boiled eggs, and kopi C. Under RM 10 for breakfast.
3. Chulia Street Night Hawker Stalls — Open from 6pm until well past midnight.
Specialty Coffee Shops in Renovated Shophouses
4. Macallum Connoisseurs Coffee (Macallum Street) — An industrial roastery and cafe in a pre-war warehouse. Single-origin beans, pour-over, espresso, and the best cold brew in Penang. RM 14–22 for a coffee.
5. China House (Beach Street) — Part art gallery, part bookshop, part bakery, part cafe — across three connected heritage shophouses. Known for its cakes and live music on evenings. RM 20–35.
6. Ome by Spacebar (Lebuh Campbell) — A dimly-lit cafe and cocktail bar in a narrow shophouse. Strong coffee by day; craft cocktails after 6pm. RM 15–25.
7. Laundry by Dryclean Only (Lorong Hutton) — One of George Town's few actual specialty roasters. RM 12–18.
8. The Mugshot Cafe (Penang Road) — A photo-covered cafe with strong coffee and reliable breakfast plates. RM 15–25 all-in.
Rooftops and Views
9. Sky Garden Rooftop Bar (Burmah Road) — Penang's most reliably good rooftop venue. George Town cityscape in one direction, Penang Hill in another. RM 20–35 for drinks.
10. Bao Tong Kong at Penang Hill — The view over George Town and the straits while drinking it is the point. Get there in the early morning before the crowds.
Worth the Trip to Batu Ferringhi
11. Feringghi Garden Restaurant (Batu Ferringhi) — Outdoor garden setting for a long afternoon. Good Western food and coffee in a tropical garden. RM 30–60 per person.
12. The Real Deal (Gurney Drive) — Specialty coffee shop near Gurney Plaza. Reliable pour-overs, good wifi, enough power outlets. RM 14–22.
Practical note: George Town's heritage zone has a cafe on almost every block. Walk into any renovated shophouse with a hand-painted chalkboard menu and you'll likely land somewhere good.
