Penang Hotels - Finding the Place to Stay

Perhaps the first choice you'll make about your visit to Penang is the hotel that you will stay at. While there are a range of different factors to consider, the hotel that you want might fit into one of these categories: hotels in downtown Georgetown, tourist district hotels with access to the beach, and low cost or budget hotels.

The advantage of a hotel in downtown Georgetown is the proximity to the shopping and dining opportunities. Georgetown is also the centre of Penang's historic scene, with buildings representative of the different stages and cultures of Penang's history. Sunway Hotel Penang, or City Bayview (4 star) or Shangri-La Penang (5 star) are some to try in this area.

The tourist or beach district, Batu Ferringi, has a number of excellent hotels. For resort style holidays, either the Golden Sands or Rasa Sayang Resorts are excellent. For charming comfort, try the Lone Pine Hotel. The Bayview Beach Resort is also a good choice. This district is famous for its beaches, and its night market. There are also a few activities in the area that will interest most tourists.

For low cost or budget hotels you should be looking in downtown Georgetown. Lebuh Chulia is a good street to find backpacker accommodation. The Cathay Hotel in Leith Street (Lebuh Leith) is well known for budget accommodation. The Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion is a historic landmark, turned themed accommodation.

In general be careful with your possessions and finances when staying in any of the hotels. To avoid misunderstandings, assess the premises before staying there. When leaving, assess your charges carefully. Ask your travel agent to book early, as many hotels are booked out in peak periods.
